Orchard Primary School Hi Allan.
I once met you and your wife way back in 1979 during a visit you paid to my then school in Broughton Astley, Leicestershire called Orchard Primary School. I was only eight years old but can still remember from all those years ago. I am now thirty five and just put my 14 month old son to bed having read him his favourite book Each Peach Pear Plum. Your books are timeless and will always lighten a childs face as well as the parents reading the stories. Thank you very much for the beautifull books that you and your wife produced over the years, I'm sure that they will stand the test of time and continue to make children laugh and smile. Kindest regards.

The Boyhood of Burglar Bill Hi Allan,
I have just read this book. I grew up loving your books, the only non Ahlberg book was "Lighting Lucy", that graced my childhood bedroom. And yes 'Burglar bill' was my favorate. The illsutrations are a credit to the Ahlberg duo!
This 'boyhood book' was wonderful, a real pleasure of a read. I read it in one day, which is a big achievement for me. I loved its chatty style, and fast moving rythmn.
I am dyslexic and left school with the reading and writing ages of an 8 year old! I have since learned to read and write to a resonable standard.
You have done a fantastic job with this book, Well done.
And thank you for all the little 'rays of sunshine' that your book gave me as a child.

You're coming to Halifax...hoo-rah! Dear Mr Ahlberg
Today my boyfriend and I wondered into the Piece Hall art gallery and were delighted by the exhibition of yours and Janet's work. We were even more interested when we learned that you will be at the Central Library on Wednesday 11 April. Both my younger sister and I grew up with your stories and now that my sister has a baby boy of her own (Reuben), it would be a little piece of 'special-ness' if you could sign a copy of 'Peepo' during the half-hour signing that day. I'm not even sure yet if I can get time out of work but I will try my best! Hope to see you next week but, if I don't, thank you for the stories anyway!
Yours to the(funny)bone,
Tanya Lewis

Janet Hello Allan,
I thoroughly enjoyed your talk in Halifax recently along with your exhibition in Piece Hall.
If possible, I would like to ask your permission to quote an extract of one of Janet's letters - displayed in the exhibition - to her friend shortly before she died.
"You've made me laugh so much and always lightened my life - a totally irreplaceable old friend...I don't want to leave but perhaps I'll just go on ahead and put the kettle on."
I would like to use this as part of an article in my church magazine.
Many thanks.

Janet's Last Book I came across your book, "Janet's Last book" in the biography section of my local library. Reading it made me cry, I was so saddened but uplifted at the same time. I wanted to say how greatly I have valued your and Janet's books. My three children were raised on Peepo, Isembard Kingdom Brick et al. The books have all been safely put away, and I look forward to bringing them out again if I'm lucky enough to become a grandparent.
I especially loved the way you fashioned the cover of your memorial book for Janet in the form of the original Peepo. The Ahlbergs will always be a treasured part of our, and our children's lives.
Kindest regards
Judith from NZ, exiled in OZ.

Replacement Letters Hello I am a teacher from Charleston, South Carolina. I have always treasured your Jolly Postman books since I was myself was in school. During the last day of school I had one student get extremely angry at me, the reasoning is still unknown. Knowing that the Jolly Postman were my favorites while the class was at recess and I in the teacher lounge the student snuck into the classroom and ripped up all the "letters" from the The Jolly Pocket Postman and The Jolly Christmas Postman. Is there anyway I can replace only the letters? The child received a punishment, however, I cried as I saw my letters in shambles. Thank you in advance for any help on getting my letters again.

Funnybones Dear Mr. Ahlberg,
I am a 22 year-old woman living in America. I read your book, Funnybones, when I was still a very small child, and it became my favourite book. So much so that, they never had it in the library because I was always reading it.
I recently remembered it and tried to find a copy I could purchase, but since it has been almost twenty years since I've read it, I couldn't remember who'd written it.
And after a few long months, I found someone who was able to give me your name. And now I've finally found a copy.
Thank you, sir, for writing such a wonderful book. Hopefully one day I'll be able to read this to my children.

Questions for Allan Ahlberg Dear Allan,
I am currently training to become a primary school teacher. As part of my assignment I have been asked to produce an author study. Being a great admirer of your work since I was young, you were my obvious choice. I was wondering if I could ask you for some information. Firstly I was wondering if any one has been of particular influence to you as an author? What was your inspiration for writing the ‘Jolly Postman’ and if there are any reasons behind the poetic form and fairytale theme that you have chosen? Would it also be possible to ask you for a timeline of work?
Thanking you for your time.

Can you sign a book please? Dear Allan
We met you at the Hay Festival last week and you kindly signed some books for us. A dark a stromy night is me husband's all time favourite and he reads it often to our son. He asked me to get a copy signed for him as he had some for other people to sign. Unfortunately, when you asked my name, I gave it without thinking who it was for and you signed it to me. My husband won't let me live it down! Wanting to put things right, I managed to track one of the large versions of the book down in the Children's Bookshop in Hay-on-Wye. I wondered if you would mind signing this one to him if I sent it to you with postage paid return packaging? I realise you're very busy at the moment with your birthday celebrations and a lot of interviews, but I'd really appreciate it if you could spare the time. It could save my marriage! (only joking). Thanks for your help.

Thanks from Fellow (as yet undiscovered)Writer/illustrator Dear Allan, I just listened to your desert island discs (14/11.08) and it made me cry with relief of hearing how long it took you, such a talented writer, to break into the industry. I started properly writing and illustrating in 2002. I've since given birth to 4 books and 2 children. Though I'm happier than ever with how my work has progressed, it seems like an uphill battle to get my work published and recently my eternal optimism has been waning. Thank you for sharing your experiences. It's so encouraging for other aspiring authors and myself to hear. I'm also so glad to hear that you've got a happy 2nd marriage as I only recently learnt about Janet's death and was heartbroken for you. My children love your books as did my husband and myself when we were growing up ("Bogglaboll" is our favourite). I wish all the best,

I wonder if you could confirm the wikipedia statement that it is an "adaptation of the recitation Burglar Bill written in 1888 by F Anstey (Thomas Anstey Guthrie)" . I remember reciting this piece in drama club when i was young and loved it then. I can see a certain similarity to the characters of both "villians" but would obviously not dare to state this as fact without your say so. kindest regards

Would you consider speaking at our event, please? Hello Allan
I know you were brought up in Oldbury, and I understand you have met the Executive Director of Children's Services in Sandwell, West Midlands - where we have a Voluntary & Community Sector Executive Group for Children & Young People matters.
We are planning an early evening event around February to raise awareness of the Group and our local network.
There are likely to be some small workshops and surgeries, and we hope for 100 - 200 people
We could be having a steel band, and a children’s drama pastiche.
We have a budget, and we are hoping to attract a keynote speaker on a theme of parental and young people motivation.
Is there any possibility you may be able to be our speaker? You own life story would be really inspirational.

Bangalorey Man My children's favourite books (1980s) were Funny Bones and a story related by the Bangalorey Man, about teddy bears being chased around a garden by a lion. Obviously Funny Bones is still in print and easily obtainable but I've had no success tracking down the latter- which I think was one of yours though I may be wrong. I would dearly like to get hold of another copy now that we have grandchildren! Does the story of the teddies being chased by a lion (said the Bangalorey Man) ring any bells? Very grateful for any light you can shed!

Please could you let me know asap if it is possible before July 2009 and what the fee would be. I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you. Nicky Kandola, Deputy Head, Little Hill PS.

World Book Day 2009 We are planning to base our World Book Day on your books. Staff and children will come to school dressed as a character from one of your books, children will complete a treasure hunt in our village and collect a letter that will be displayed in windows of ten different buildings including the police station and a church. This also enhances our topic of buildings this term. The children will be invited to carry out writing and illustrating activities and the winners will be awarded a signed copy of books that I have collected throughout the year. Authors such as Julia Donaldson, Emily Gravett, Lauren Child visited my local independent book shop and signed books for us. We are hoping that we will have our very own Jolly Postman who will award prizes on the day but I was wondering if you could possibly sign a book for us or send us a poster or photo of yourself?Thank you for reading this message,
Gayle Ripper

Invitation The children in Year 3 at my school are putting on a production of poems and songs by Allan Ahlberg. We are going to call it school is great and it will be in ur new theatre. We are very excited about this and were wondering whether Allan Ahlberg would care to join us?
We can pay his expenses offer dinner afterwards and a bed for the night if it is late.
We can consider additional charges if they are within budget. I am hoping it will be a charming event and cannot imagine how to improve it other than the presence of the poet himself!
Is there any way we could persuade him to attend?
Yours hoping

I've just met another Allan Ahlberg in Australia Hi Allan. We recently moved to Townsville Australia and met a couple Shirley and Allan Ahlberg at the Townsville Golf Club. Shirley told me that there was a famous children's author by the same name as her husband and they wondered whether somehow you shared mutual ancestors? I'm printing out as much info about you as I can to pass to them, but any further info. would be appreciated. I've recently gone into the grandparenting business so will be getting some of your books soon. Best wishes, Rosemary

wonderful creations that have enriched many lives My 22 month old daughter was introduced to 'Peepo' very early on and loved it, so when I saw a board version of 'Each Peach, Pear Plum' I jumped to buy it. She adores the rhyme and illustrations and after one read with lots of discussion she had virtually memorised the story - testament to the wonderful book and how it involves the reader in every word and stroke of the paintbrush. Sharing such wonderful books is how children learn a lifetime of potential enjoyment from books.

Thank you I have just been listening to you on Radio 4, talking to Janet Ellis.
I just wanted you to know that, as a parent I just loved reading 'Burglar Bill' to my son, Daniel,at least 30 years ago, and he loved it too.
As a teacher, and latterly a Headteacher, (I retired last year), I read 'Burglar Bill' to too many children to number - I never grew tired of it, and neither did they.
And now I'm grandmother to Mabel, aged just 6 months. She's already been given 'Peepo', a book that I also love but which was new to her mother, an art teacher in a Community College: but what I'm really looking forward to is sharing 'Burglar Bill' with Mabel, and repeating the words 'That's a nice .............I'll have that!' until he finally finds the baby - and Burglar Betty.
Many, many thanks for the hours of reading enjoyment and pleasure you have given me and many, many children.

Remember Hi Alan,
You might be forgiven for thinking me forward using your christian name but we do go back a long way - an awfully ling way. I was thrilled to hear your radio programme and realise that I knew a local boy made very very good. Oh the joy of reflected glory.
I lived at the top right hand end of Barker St. very close to Fragnolis - do you remember the wonderful penny cornets?
I recall you and your brother Andrew walking to school with your Mother. I have a mental picture of you with short trousers, boots and a pullover and your Mother a small rotund lady who wore a long coat almostto her ankles , a fhat with a small crown and brim and specs. I don,t recall us being in the same class at Rood End School, but think ther Fletchers, Trevor Darby, Brian Benham and the lovely curly headed copper family.
It really was wonderful to hear of your success - can.t think how I missed your books for our boys but our eldest is now 48 so by the time you were published he was a little too old - but we k
now have an 18 month old grand-daughter living in the U S A, so can have the fun of introducing yourbooks to her - oh nearly forgot - my name was Christine Deakin - not that I expect it will mean anything. Best wishes for the future.
Chrstine Bell.

Mrs Vole the Vet My daughter came home with this book today as a gift from santa at her school party and asked me to read it to her before bedtime, after the second page I was shocked, already a broken marriage and the ex husband off with a new wife and 3 new stepsons, so "we will forget about him" Then Mrs Voles kids seem to think that a good quality in a new man for there mum is a nice smile and a good wallet/cheque book! Is this book a joke, really? Disgusted.
Im suprised you didnt have Mrs Vole having a bit with Mr Moo the milkman despite the fact Mrs Moo was mentioned...
